OTAT rang in the new year by celebrating 17 years of service, plus over 12,000 lives saved by sharing Sprout’s story via social media.
The organization described her as “A Tibetan Mastiff found as a stray in Chicago dragging over 30 lbs of matted fur, urine, and feces.”
After receiving a message about Sprout’s unfortunate state from Chicago Animal Care & Control, OTAT was able to send members to retrieve her within the hour, according to their Instagram post.
In OTAT's video, staff can be seen dressed in full-body surgical gear and face coverings as they lifted the Tibetan Mastiff and hoisted her onto an operating table.
With the dog sedated, the team went to work, shaving pounds of excess fur from her body.

“During a sedated groom we removed 32.4 lbs of mats that tugged on her skin causing pain, irritation, and a raging skin infection,” their caption explained.
“For the first time in who knows how long, Sprout can urinate, defecate, walk, and lay down without pain. She is why we keep going,” OTAT wrote of the dog’s much-needed makeover.
In a follow-up Instagram post, OTAT revealed that “Sprout is safe in a loving foster home while she decompresses and receives treatment for her skin infection.”
The upload contained three images of the dog, each with her looking as comfy as can be. Two of the pictures showed the Tibetan Mastiff snuggled up on a sofa.
In a final post shared Friday, Jan. 10, the organization said they “love watching” Sprout grow.

“In just a few days, Sprout has gone from a stray in dire need of medical attention to being hand-fed warm nuggets on the couch while wearing a onesie. She has been a bright star during this dark week,” they captioned a sweet video compilation of the canine being showered with love and lots of rubs.
