Mario Dedivanovic has created some of the most iconic beauty looks of the past two decades. These include Kim Kardashian’s glossy, almost wet eyeshadow at the 2019 Met Gala, which mirrored the beads dripping from her dress; Salma Hayek’s soft, smudged blue eyeliner at the 2022 SAG Awards; and Ariana Grande’s striking green eye and lip look for the 15th-anniversary celebration of Wicked in 2018.

Even more, he pioneered the sculpted contour that defined a decade of red-carpet looks and helped launch the world of YouTube beauty gurus. Although his work is rooted in the exclusive world of A-list celebrities, Dedivanovic has always been eager to share his expertise with a wider audience.

It was a 2009 makeup tutorial posted by Kardashian that made him a household name. That same year, he also launched his masterclass series, attracting thousands of aspiring makeup artists worldwide who come to watch him work, using makeup to shape shadows and manipulate light with the precision of a Renaissance painter.

With the launch of his namesake brand, Makeup by Mario, in 2020, Dedivanovic, the founder and CEO, gave the public the tools to recreate (or at least attempt) his world-class makeup looks at home. For his latest launch, Dedivanovic created the mascara he always wanted in his kit.

Master Mascara, out March 27, is a volumizing, clump and flake-resistant formula that lengthens, lifts, and defines lashes. “Master Mascara is the formula I’ve always dreamed of creating, designed for both professionals and everyday wearers who want fuller, longer lashes without clumping or smudging,” Dedivanovic says. It features a custom brush and bottle with a stopper to remove excess product, inspired by Dedivanovic’s technique of wiping the brush before use. The bristles help separate lashes for extra definition. “My mascara technique always included curling the lashes, applying mascara, and finishing with a lash separator. With Master Mascara, I can skip the curling and separating,” Dedivanovic says.

He’s meticulous about refining the formulas—there’s a reason the brand waited more than four years before launching a mascara. The team tested hundreds of variations before finding the right one. “Once we created the brush of our dreams, we needed to ensure it worked effortlessly with the formula, providing the right payoff. The brush had to allow the formula to deliver instant results while still being buildable,” Dedivanovic says. “It was incredible to finally reach that ‘aha!’ moment when everything came together.” The final product features provitamin B5 and castor oil to strengthen and condition lashes, plus polymers to lift the lashes and help them hold their shape.

“This isn’t just my first mascara—it’s the one I’ve always wanted, and I’m so excited to finally share it.” To celebrate, Dedivanovic shared his best tips for doing your makeup at home.

What are the biggest mistakes people make when doing their makeup at home?

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they're doing their makeup at home is doing it in the wrong lighting. They're not using natural daylight or doing it under fluorescent lights, and sometimes, the colors can get a little skewed when they're doing that.

Do you have any tips for applying Master Mascara?

For the best results, I like to concentrate most of the product at the roots to create maximum definition, then gently comb it through to the tips. I finish by using the tip of the brush to separate and perfect each lash for a lifted, sculpted look.

How do you recommend applying mascara to the bottom lashes without smudging?

I like to apply the mascara to the bottom lashes in a windshield wiper motion, putting the brush vertically and going left to right so that you're not hitting the skin underneath. That's where you'll get a more clean application.

Do you have a favorite celebrity beauty look you’ve done?

Listen, it's been 25 years. It's been thousands of looks. There are so many of them. There are the more famous, sort of iconic ones, like the Met Gala, 2018, 2019, but then there are also the ones from my early days as a makeup artist, where, you know, everything was just so fun and innocent, and there was just so much love of makeup and artistry. And people probably wouldn't even remember those looks, but definitely a lot of looks from back in the day. Also, some of my looks with Kate Bosworth have been some of my favorites because I've been able to sort of demonstrate my love of natural makeup. So there's been a lot. It's hard to choose. It's like choosing a baby

What beauty trends do you see on the horizon?

I see that there is going to be a continuation of love for juicy glossy lips, definitely this sort of cloud skin, or very blurred effect of makeup, softening and blurring the lines. We're going to see a continuation of a softer sculpt with more soft products. We're going to see less nose contour and things like that.
