Bill Nye is now designing bow ties

Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill Nye the bow tie guy!

Everyone’s favourite scientist can now add “designer” to his resume.

Bill Nye has teamed up with designer Nick Graham for a limited edition collection of bow ties.

“I grew up watching him with my kids,” Graham tells Women’s Wear Daily. “So I went up to him and asked if he wanted to do a bow tie line and he said, ‘Of course!’ He is Mr. Bow Tie and is probably the most visible person in the world who wears bow ties.”

The collection features 15 ties which retail for $49.50 USD each, and includes traditional designs like polka dots, stripes and black watch plaid, but also includes more Nye-inspired looks like the periodic table. And yes, there is one that says “Science rules.”

Ten per cent of sales will go to the Planetary Society, Nye’s nonprofit organization that looks for life on other planets.

“I like his message and how he presents it,” Graham tells WWD. “He appeals to a 22-34 demographic and has 4.7 million followers. Not quite Beyoncé, but…”

Nye claims he has more than 400 ties, but according to The Observer, it’s for practical reasons.

“The reason scientists started wearing bow ties is because when you lean over, it does’t slip into the soup or flip into the flask or the beaker,” Nye explains. “Now it’s just how we roll.”
