You've heard of ChatGPT, but have you heard of artificial intelligence being used in music? Artists including Billie Eilish and Katy Perry have – and they're campaigning against it.

Platforms and tech giants including YouTube have tested AI music-generating tools, which clone stars' voices, and the results have started to emerge. Last year, a song called 'Heart on My Sleeve', which used AI-generated vocals that mimicked The Weeknd and Drake, went viral, before being pulled from streaming services.

This week, the Artists Rights Alliance published a petition against AI-generated music that highlights the threat it poses to the industry. An open letter has already been signed by Eilish and Perry, alongside Zayn Malik, Camila Cabello and more.

The petition begins by calling on AI developers, tech companies and digital music services to cease the use of AI and protect the rights of creators.

'Make no mistake: we believe that, when used responsibly, AI has enormous potential to advance human creativity and in a manner that enables the development and growth of new and exciting experiences for music fans everywhere,' continues the letter. 'Unfortunately, some platforms and developers are employing AI to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians and rightsholders'.

Other artists who have signed the letter include Stevie Wonder, Jon Bon Jovi, the Jonas Brothers and Noah Kahan.

However, not all artists oppose the use of AI tools to create music, and David Guetta and Grimes are among those who have expressed support for them. The latter even said she would 'split 50% royalties on any successful AI-generated song that uses my voice'.
