Billie Eilish has opened up about how dyeing her hair from black to blonde triggered an identity crisis.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Grammy and Oscar winner discussed her hair transformation in 2021. At the time, the singer had black hair and green roots before she debuted a new look to her Instagram followers, which included a fringe parted to each side of her face and choppy blonde layers and waves.

After a period during Covid in 2020 when she admitted to not being able to see herself ‘objectively anymore’ following her stratospheric rise to fame and success, Eilish said that switching her hair colour resulted in her questioning her identity.

‘And then I dyed my hair blond and I immediately was like, “Oh, I have no idea who I am”,’ she told the publication.

The hair transformation came around the same time she recorded her second album Happier Than Ever, which the publication notes ‘lacked the incandescent brilliance’ of her first album, When We All Fall Asleep.

Elsewhere, the singer opened about her propensity to unexpectedly change the colour of her hair (she’s been everything from grey to pink) over the years, noting that despite having blue hair at one point, it’s her ‘least-favourite colour’.

‘Which is so stupid because my hair was blue for years,’ she said. ‘But I didn’t mean for it to be — that was an accident. Somebody put too much toner in my white hair and suddenly it was lavendery-blue, and then I kept getting it blue, and then I was known as this blue-haired girl, and I f*cking hated it. I went months and months trying to get the colour out, and then I had this teal hair. But over the last couple of years, I’ve just been like, “Wait, blue is so who I am at my core”.’

Months after dyeing her hair blonde and showing off a Marilyn Monroe-inspired ‘do at the 2021 Met Gala, Eilish returned to her ‘dark’ side, and shared a photo of her newly-dyed brunette locks on Instagram with the caption ‘miss me?’.

The same year, Eilish told ELLE US that her once-memorable green-dye made her too recognisable in public. ‘I couldn’t go anywhere with that hair because it was so obviously me,' she said. 'I wanted anonymity... I was terrified of the paparazzi and these stalkers I’ve had. But my friend was like, “Don’t worry: You’re okay. Nothing’s gonna happen.” And I took my hood off, and I felt like a new person.’

She added of her blonde hair at the time: ‘I had no goal of “This is going to make everybody think differently of me. The other day, I posted a video from when I had green hair, and I saw people go, “I miss this Billie, the green-haired Billie.” I’m still the same person. I’m not just different Barbies with different heads.'
