Blake Lively Broke Her No-Nudity Rule for Her 'Intense' Role in 'All I See Is You'

Blake Lively never planned on baring all for the camera—in part, because she found onscreen nudity "distracting." But in a new interview with Vanity Fair, the actress revealed that all it took was the right pitch from the right director for her to join the ranks of the distracters.

That pitch was for All I See Is You, a psychological drama out October 27 that follows a young woman as she regains her sight after being nearly blind her whole life—an event that, based on the movie's trailer, seems to upset her codependent husband. But because of her no-nudity rule, Lively's team almost passed on the role, which requires the lead to appear partially nude onscreen after her sight is restored and she discovers new things about her relationship and sexuality. When Lively heard about the film, though, she wanted to see the script. "I thought, well, [director Marc Forster] is not unmoving," she explained. "Let me read it, and if it's great, then I'll talk him out of it."

But after reading it, the 30-year-old mom of two decided she wanted the role and was willing to break her self-made rule for it. She told Vanity Fair that Forster's script completely changed the way she thought about onscreen nudity. "I always find nudity distracting," she said. "I'm very in love with my husband, but if there's a pair of boobs out, I'm a human being! You're like, 'boobs!' It doesn't mean I'm lusting for them, but when there's naked boobies, you look at them."

With her mind effectively changed, Lively ended up working 19-hour days to create "the most intense film I'd ever been on." As a result, despite her appearing partially nude onscreen for the first time—or, perhaps, because of it—"it's the performance that I'm most proud of," she said.

Other actresses have similarly felt empowered by their nude scenes in movies and TV. Earlier this year, Thandie Newton revealed that she preferred filming scenes for HBO's Westworld while naked and vulnerable, rather than in her hypersexual old-time-y costume. "I was more comfortable naked because the costume was the most potent objectification of a woman, with the boobs pushed right up, the tiny waist. It's an invitation for sex," Newton said at the time. "The fishnet tights, the little heels with the laces…It's all about sensuality. It's about eroticism. It's about 'Look, but don't touch.' It's all there to make the invitation for sex as provocative as possible and then the promise of satisfaction is practically just there."
