Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani Make This Showstopper Dish for Christmas Dinner Every Year
It's a big effort that boasts an even bigger reward.
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are all about going big for the holidays. So big that each year, they tackle a monster of a dish—with their own spin on it. While other recipes have come and gone since the pair got together in 2015, Gwen and Blake are sticking to one memorable meal in particular. And it's no wonder why.
Welcome to the duo’s Christmas tradition: making a timpano dome. This culinary feat is not only fit for any holiday feast, but it's also impressive enough to wow two celebrities who have certainly seen it all. Not sure what exactly a timpano is? Read on to learn about the elaborate dish, as well as how the music power couple has made it their own.
What Is a Timpano?
If you aren’t familiar with timpano, allow us to introduce you. A timpano is a drum-like (hence the name) dome-shaped Italian recipe filled with pasta, vegetables, hard-boiled eggs, sauce, and cheese, all wrapped in dough. Sometimes, the stuffing includes meatballs, sausage, or eggplant.
Stanley Tucci or Tony Shalhoub fans may recognize this beast of a recipe from the movie "Big Night" where Shalhoub’s character explains, ”Timpano is a pasta, with a special crust...shaped like a drum...and the inside” (he pauses for effect), “Only the most important things in the world.” A montage shows it being expertly crafted and then dramatically unveiled.
Making a timpano is a lot of effort, but the payoff is over-the-top grand.
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani's Christmas Timpano Tradition
In an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" last year, Stefani said she and Shelton wanted to mix things up for their holiday spread some years back. They searched for something that wasn't traditional to them and landed on the timpano. They've been making it for Christmas ever since.
"We stumbled across this dish called the timpano dome,” Stefani said. “We started doing that a few years ago...and now that's the thing.”
The couple decided to get even more creative with this already complex dish by swapping out the exterior dough for something else. Stefani said "Some Italians might get mad about this because typically it would be pasta wrapped around it, but we started doing a pizza dough because it tastes yummy.”
However they make it this year, it appears Gwen and Blake keep learning as each year passes. Our sister brand, People, covered one of the couple's earlier attempts, as documented on Stefani's social media. She noted, "We're going to make sure we do everything from scratch. We love making the memories...We go big."
They sure do! If only we could try a slice of this true masterpiece. Instead, we'll just have to tackle a timpano for ourselves. It's guaranteed to be a showstopper on the holiday table—and a delicious one at that.
