Hey ironic T-shirt wearers, looking for a way to simultaneously offend a wide range of cultural groups and ethnicities while simultaneously boasting the fact that you think genocide is cool?
Well, look no further than Urban Outfitter’s new ‘Dictators with Attitude’ T-shirt.
The T-shirt is available for purchase from the U.K.’s online store, reports The Daily Mail, and features Adolf Hitler, Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin and Kim Jong-Il as faux dictator superheros called "Dictators with Attitude”or “D.W.A."
The white T-shirt features images of the five men wearing baseball caps or toques and bears the subheading “The world’s most dangerous rap group” and “Part-time superheroes." The T-shirt does not currently appear on the North American Urban Outfitters websites.
So how did something so offensive and decidedly not clever make it onto store shelves? Perhaps someone at Urban Outfitters thought it was time to start pushing the envelope and thought joking about the mass murder of a large swath of the world’s population would be a good place to start.
The store landed itself in some hot water back in October for selling shirts bearing the image of Argentine revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara, after a New York City human rights group complained they were using the image of a tyrant who murdered and suppressed individual freedom in Cuba. Those shirts were pulled from stores and online shops.
And it’s not just Urban Outfitters.
Back in October, the GAP pulled a black T-shirt bearing the phrase “MANIFEST DESTINY” from stores after native rights groups reminded the company that the phrase was used in 19th century America as both an ideology and slogan for the genocide of thousands of the country's First Nations people.
Perhaps the imminent backlack will teach Urban Outfitters and other retailers trying to be hip to stay away from politics and stick with what they do best: reprints of MJ covers and velvet skinny jeans.
