Blue and white: The dreamy tablescape trend everyone’s talking about

Why blue and white tableware is on-trend right now Casa by JJ

Classic colour combinations are always winners in our books, and blue and white is one of our favourites. A key colour trend for spring tablescapes, this timeless pairing offers charm and elegance in equal measure and is a go-to for creating a sophisticated dining set-up year-round.

Think blue (from soft chambray to deep indigo) and white tableware, and you might conjure up images of gorgeous Chinoiserie designs, famous Delftware, iconic Wedgwood blue, Burleigh's historic Calico pattern or Spode's timeless Blue Italian collection.

'Blue and white in ceramics has an incredibly long history – so much so that I wonder if it’s somehow hard-wired into our aesthetic preferences,' explains Sue Ure, designer and ceramicist at Sue Ure Maison. 'Chinese ceramics have played such a large part in defining European tableware trends from the 18th century onwards.'

This verastile colour combo evokes themes of the outdoors, so very much leans into the beauty of nature. 'With blue connecting us to the sky and sea, it naturally brings an element of openness and tranquillity, while white adds freshness and simplicity, symbolising new beginnings,' says Andrea Waters from Spode.

Blue and white tableware also tap into two of the most popular spring/summer trends from the past year – the Grecian-inspired tomato girl aesthetic and the Italian-inspired Amalficore style.

'The colour pairing reminds us of the picturesque Santorini – so if you want to bring an element of the paradisiac island to your dinner table, adding some pink bougainvillaea flowers or citrus fruits will transfer you straight to the Greek island,' adds Andrea.

How to decorate with blue and white tableware

Blue and white is a striking pairing, so your porcelain or stoneware pieces will likely shine all by themselves. But to introduce an accent colour, choose spring-inspired accessories in pink, green, or even yellow.

And don't forget to embrace the very essence of nature. 'You can scatter sprigs of greenery to draw you even closer to the natural world,' suggests Andrea. If you want to go for holiday vibes, add olive branches and citrus fruits.

Love a more refined finish? Pair this style with ornate candlesticks and fresh, fanciful blooms for a Bridgerton-esque feel. Layer blue and white plates and teacups, with napkins and a matching tablecloth or runner, and you’ll have a dinner setting fit for Queen Charlotte herself.
