As someone who, in part, writes about beauty for a living, I like to think I have a relatively low-maintenance skincare routine. Granted, as far as skincare concerns go, my bumps and blackheads pretty much go hand-in-hand with my cycle, so for the majority of the month, my skin tends to be more friend than foe.

However, when that hormonal imbalance comes to play, it doesn't mess around. During my period, it's like every pore on my face suddenly thinks they're the main character and demands all eyes be on them. As I've gotten older, this main character attitude has extended itself to my cheeks and jawbone, and even though no one asked for it, the occasional neck pimple.

And while I, along with many others, have been taught that acne treatments need to involve skin-stripping ingredients and mild discomfort, I've come to learn that my low-maintenance skin jives best with gentle targeted products, like the Meltdown Acne Oil from Blume.

What is it?

Blume's Meltdown Acne Oil is a dual-purpose face oil that can be used as a spot treatment or in conjunction with your favourite moisturizer for full-coverage acne prevention.

The oil is green in colour and formulated with rosehip, blue tansy, black cumin seed, and tamanu oil to treat acne-prone skin and target dark spots, acne scars, redness, and even ageing.

Blume recommends using one pump on clean skin for spot treatments and one to two pumps mixed in with moisturizer if you want complete coverage.

First impressions

The first thing I noticed about Blume's Melt Down was the smell — I'm kind of in love with it. It smells like a combination of fresh herbs, essential oils, and camping in the mountains in the best possible way.

The consistency is what you would expect it to be, considering that it's a face oil, so nothing out of the ordinary there. However, do as Blume says and not as I do because in disregarding the 1-2 pump recommendation, I applied three pumps on my bare skin and, consequently, experienced very mild discomfort.

Coming to my instruction-following senses the next day, I combined one pump of Melt Down with a gel moisturizer in my palm, applied it to my face, and was completely fine.

After a week of daily use during my cycle, I can honestly say I noticed a difference. While my skin wasn't completely its non-period self, it was drastically better than pre-Meltdown months. I had fewer breakouts than I normally would, and the pimples that did come were less eye-catching than they usually are.

What people are saying

"Couldn't be happier," writes one Blume reviewer. "I absolutely love this product. I have suffered from adult cystic acne caused by PCOS for over five years, and this has helped my skin so much. I will be a lifetime user of the Blume skin oil, for sure! Love the fresh herbal smell also!"

"This product is amazing! It also smells like essential oils," says another shopper. "I get frequent breaks outs on my T-zone and cheeks, and my skin already looks better after a week of using it. I mix this product with my nighttime moisturizer. If you have oily skin like me, I highly recommend this oil. It melts into your skin and makes it feel dewy and soft. I honestly felt helpless because of how sensitive my skin is but this product really works."

"I could tell after the first use that my affected areas around my mouth were less red, and after using it for almost a month, I haven't had any new breakouts," echos a third reviewer. "I can tell my scars are getting lighter, and this stuff seems to be making my skin more plump and radiant as well. I definitely recommend this product!"

Verdict

Starting at $28 for half an ounce and $45 for one ounce, Blume's Meltdown isn't the most pocket-friendly acne product available, but in my opinion, it's worth the price.

Meltdown is all-natural, vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, and made in Canada, so at the end of the day, you get what you pay for — in my opinion. Interested? To read more Meltdown Acne Oil reviews and shop the product for yourself, check out Blume's website here.
