Bobbi Althoff Recalls Finding Out She Had a Half-Brother 5 Years Ago: 'I Was Pretty Mad'

Bobbi Althoff grew up in an unconventional family with three half-siblings — but she recently added one more to the mix.

Five years ago, the podcast host found out she has another half-sibling on her dad's side. On WTF with Marc Maron, Althoff, 27, opened up on the Dec. 16 episode about her initial reaction when she first found out about her older half-brother and recalled how "weird" it was to meet him for the first time five years ago.

"My dad recently — as in within the last 10 years — found out that he actually had [a son before] he met my mom," She explained. "My aunt one day calls my dad and asks 'Hey, does [this] last name ring a bell?' My dad says 'Yeah, that was the [name of] the pastor's family of the church that I used to go to.' "

She said her dad knew the pastor's daughter well and Althoff's aunt told him about her son, who had looked into his family tree via Ancestry and found out that they had a common relative. This quickly led to Althof's father finding out he was the man's biological dad.

Althoff noted that her half-brother was 40 years old with a family of his own at the time they first met and recalled thinking " 'Who is this guy?' "

"I was pretty mad at first," she continued when discussing their first meeting. "I was like 'My dad had an affair with somebody and had this kid?'... They were just both young."

She then remembered her dad's "nonchalant" reaction to finding out about his long-lost son and said that he "started spending all of his money buying Disneyland tickets and everything for that family."

"I was like, 'Dad, you don't have money to be doing this. What are you doing? But he was just trying to make up for lost time."

The Really Good Podcast host said this new addition to the family made her dad a grandparent to his son's children before she gave birth to her two daughters, joking "he took that title from my dad before I got to." Althoff added how much her dad "loved" being there for his grandchildren.

"My dad [and I] got close to his family over the last five years," she explained, noting that while their initial meeting was a little awkward at first, she is now closer to him and his family, and their kids spend time together despite the 10-year age gap.

"Now I'm gonna take my kids in December to go spend two weeks near his house," she shared.
