Bride Disinvites Sister to Her Wedding After She ‘Pranked’ Guests with Fake Invitations

The 28-year-old bride-to-be shared a post on Reddit’s popular "Am I the A------?" thread that she and her 30-year-old fiancé had been planning their wedding for “over a year” when her 25-year-old sister, Jenny, played a practical joke on the couple.
She prefaced this by noting that her sister has “always been a bit of a prankster,” and while most of the time her jokes were “harmless” and easy to laugh off, a recent one involving her wedding invitations wasn’t.
The bride shared that last month her sister decided to send out “fake wedding invitations” to some of their relatives and friends saying that the nuptials were going to be a "casual backyard BBQ" and that “everyone should bring a dish to share.”
She said she only found out when one of her aunts called her asking what “she should bring to the BBQ.” While the bride had been “confused” at first, she quickly realized what happened when her aunt forwarded her the invitation.
"I was horrified,” the 28-year-old wrote of her reaction to seeing it. “My actual wedding is a formal event at a nice venue, and I couldn't believe Jenny thought it was okay to send out these fake invitations.”
She said she eventually “confronted” her sister about it, and her response was to laugh about it and say it “was just a joke.” The 25-year-old also told her sister that she would send out “the real invitations soon.”

“I told her it wasn't funny and that she had caused a lot of confusion and stress,” the bride continued. “She apologized, but I could tell she didn't really see what the big deal was.”
The bride said after further reflection, she decided to disinvite her sister from her wedding because she didn’t trust her “not to pull another stunt” and didn’t want to spend her wedding day “worrying about what she might do.”
“I told her this, and she flipped out, saying I was overreacting and that she was just trying to have some fun. My parents are also upset with me, saying that it's cruel to exclude my sister from such an important event,” she explained. “Now I'm starting to wonder if I'm being too harsh?”
Several Redditors agreed with the bride and commented that her sister was being “childish” when she decided to pull the prank. One commenter said, “Genuinely cannot see how that's funny. It smacks of a jealous, insecure little girl who wants to ruin your day.”
Another person joked that the bride should turn the tables on her sister, writing, “Send her a fake invite with the wrong address. You know, for jokes and stuff. When she misses the event, tell her she’s overreacting.”
One Redditor suggested that the bride’s sister send out apology messages in response to her actions.
“‘I’m just trying to have some fun.’ Yeah, by f------ up your big day and making it all about her,” they wrote. “She’s already sown confusion, and her sending out ‘real’ invitations is just going to cause more. What she needs to send out is handwritten apologies.”
