Britney Spears Made the Strangest Allusion to Ex Justin Timberlake on Instagram

It appears that Britney Spears has extended an olive branch ... in the form of a strangely somber back handspring video montage.

Clearly, Brit and Justin Timberlake’s teenage romance (circa 1998-2002) is still at the forefront of our minds — but maybe it’s on Britney’s, too … ?

The 36-year-old was casually endorsing two of her favorite things (“flips and Mother Nature!!!) on Instagram over the weekend when fans noticed something amiss in her workout video.

Though it’s not uncommon for Spears to post a clip of herself exercising or dancing to music, this time around she wasn’t moving to your typical top 40 hit, but rather a song by her ex (who still seems pretty salty about their breakup). And this isn’t your go-to J.T. dance song either — not “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” not “SexyBack,” not “Rock Your Body” (and before you get excited, it’s NOT “Cry Me a River”). Nope, Britney Jean chose “LoveStoned/ I Think She Knows (Interlude).” Excuse me, what?

In case you don’t have 7 minutes and 24 seconds to reacquaint yourself with the Future Sex/Love Songs track, I’ll give you a condensed refresher: the song is about a woman who’s “freaky and she knows it,” “looks like a model except she’s got a little more ass,” and thus has got the crooner “love stoned.” Keep in mind, this was recorded four years-post Britney. By then, he was just totally over the whole thing and had no reason to bring up his ex in interviews, or anything

What does Britney's overt reference to her ex mean? We couldn't tell you, but judging by this summer's viral video clip in which Miss Spears forgets Andy Cohen's name, we're thinking maybe she just didn't realize it was Timberlake's song?

Whatever the case, it's safe to say that Britney’s flips have us flipping out.
