Canned Tuna Is Being Recalled in 27 States (So Far) — Here’s What We Know
Craving a tuna salad sandwich for lunch? If the protein-packed tinned fish is your typical go-to, you might want to think again before you crack one open.
On February 7, Tri-Union Seafoods voluntarily recalled a bunch of its canned tuna products sold under Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s brand names due to potential botulism concerns. The easy-open pull tab on the recalled cans seem to have manufacturing defects, which causes the seal to become broken. Over time, this could cause the product to leak, or, in worst-case scenarios, lead to botulism.
Botulism is a type of food poisoning caused by the toxic bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which attacks the body’s nervous system, resulting in muscle spasms and difficulty breathing. In extreme cases, it can lead to death.
The canned tuna products were sold at Trader Joe’s, H-E-B, Costco, Harris Teeter, Publix, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers and distributed in 27 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. The products include tuna packed in water and olive oil, and the best-buy dates range from 12/12/2027 to 1/27/2028. (For a full list of the products recalled, click here.)
So far no consumer illnesses have been reported, and at the time of publishing no other Tri-Union Seafood products have been affected.
If you have purchased one of these products, however, do not eat it (even if it smells fine). Instead, throw it out immediately or return it for a full refund. You can also contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com or 833-374-0171 (available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET) to receive a retrieval kit and coupon for a replacement product, as well as to express any other concerns. If you did happen to eat one of these products and are feeling sick, seek medical attention immediately.
