Cate Blanchett Will Not Apologize for Her Outfit Repeating

Cate Blanchett will not apologize for repeating her outfits on the red carpet.

In a new interview, the Oscar-winning actress discussed her tendency to rewear couture looks to Hollywood events—often updating parts of the pieces to make them feel new again.

“It should be completely unremarkable, the idea of re-wearing (clothes), because we do it in our daily lives,” the actress told Business of Fashion. “We do it out of habit, we do it out of choice, we do it out of necessity.”

She said that not only does she rewear garments to promote sustainability, but also to defy the unspoken rules of red-carpet fashion—one of them being to never step out in a look you've been photographed in before.

Earlier this month, Blanchett attended the 2023 TIME Women of the Year Gala, where she was honored, in an old Alexander Vauthier Couture short sleeve jacket pulled from her closet. And over the years, she has reworn designer staples including a black Loewe suit she debuted at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, and a black velvet Maison Margiela gown she debuted at the 2015 Oscars.

She's also big on repurposing. At the SAG Awards last month, she wore a dress with lace taken from a Giorgio Armani gown she wore to the Golden Globes in 2014 and later to the Cannes Film Festival in 2018.

“I think that there’s a lot of people like me who are tired of the churn,” Blanchett said. “But who also want to keep the industry healthy in all its dimensions. There’s a chance here to redefine the notion of luxury. I think that it’s bringing back the cherished love aspect of it.”
