Cate Blanchett, Vanessa Hudgens and More Wore Vintage on the Oscars Red Carpet

Archival pieces are trending on the biggest night in entertainment.

Though there are greater pushes for sustainability in fashion, the red carpet has been slow to adopt these practices. There have been some developments, including campaigns like Red Carpet Green Dress and individuals like Cate Blanchett committing to wear only pre-worn or reworked pieces this awards cycle. By the 2023 Oscars, it felt like pre-loved garments were starting to become more mainstream.

Vanessa Hudgens channeled Audrey Hepburn in a strapless black-and-white, figure-hugging vintage Chanel gown, while Winnie Harlow stood out in a yellow dress from Giorgio Armani's Spring 2005 Haute Couture collection. Rooney Mara looked to the Alexander McQueen archives for her bridal-white look, and Blanchett stuck to her pledge in a custom Louis Vuitton look consisting of an archival top and a maxi skirt made from what the brand describes as "sustainable silk."

The Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty saw even more vintage looks, with Kendall Jenner in a vintage Jean Paul-Gaultier gold scalloped gown and Kerry Washington in archival Donna Karan.
