Britons are getting their "first taste of winter" this week, according to the Met Office, as temperatures plummet and snowy, icy conditions sweep across large swathes of the country.

The weather experts said that "cold Arctic air" is "firmly in place" over the UK. "Daytime temperatures will be in the low single figures for most, potentially slightly less cold in the far south, though a wind chill means it will feel cold for many," the Met Office said in its weekly forecast.

Outdoors, this means wrapping up in warm layers and making sure we are careful on slippery surfaces, as the risk of injury from slips and falls increases in adverse weather conditions.

But what about inside the house? We'll be feeling the chill quite keenly over the next few nights, but while some of us are all too keen to crank the thermostat up, others may be holding out still - particularly as Ofgem is set to announce the new energy price cap for January on Friday 22 November, and it's expected to rise.

It may come as a surprise that experts said it was OK to turn the central heating on all the way back in October. However, the mild start to November meant there wasn't much need for it - until now.
