Some of us can happily chop onions daily for months without shedding a tear.
Until dicing one makes it look as as if you’ve watched The Notebook on a loop all day.
And while we’ve been told to put spoons in our mouths/lemon on our hands, it’s never really stopped the flow.
According to Justine Schofield, MasterChef alumni and Everyday Gourmet host, there’s no silver-bullet solution to preventing onion tears, but there are a few things that might help:
“Well, there are a few tricks, like putting goggles on,” Schofield told Huffington Post.
“But if you don’t want to do that, there are a few other things, like washing your hands straight after chopping the onion. That seems to stop the tears.”
Another thing to try is popping them in a big bowl of water for a while before chopping.
“That takes away some of that pungent strong feel from the onions, and you can start slicing them after that,” she explained.
“There’s also the trick of putting them in freezer but to be honest that makes them [more watery] which is not ideal.”
So, ultimately, Schofield suggests the best thing to do is grin and bear it.
“If you just have one onion, I’d just say get it done quite fast,” she suggested.
“A little cry here and there is good for you.”
Which is a rather good life philosophy to have anyway.
