Christina Applegate Reveals Why Her MS Leaves Her "Screaming" in Bed
The actress has previously said she doesn't "enjoy living" amid her battle with the disease.
Christina Applegate has been open about her struggles with multiple sclerosis, getting down to the uncomfortable details of what it's like living with the chronic nervous system disease. The Married...with Children actress recently revealed that MS can often be unpredictable—and in her case, it leaves her screaming in bed from the discomfort she feels.
"Everybody has different ways of it showing up,” Applegate said in the November 5 episode of her MeSsy podcast, which she co-hosts by with The Sopranos actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also struggled MS and talks about her experiences on the program. “I lay in bed screaming. Like, the sharp pains, the ache, the squeezing.”
Over time, Applegate revealed, the MS—which she was diagnosed with in 2021—has traveled to places she didn't have it before. “I can’t even pick up my phone sometimes, because now it’s traveled into my hands," she explained. "So I’ll try to go get my phone or get my remote to turn on the TV or whatever, and sometimes I can’t even hold them.”
Living with MS has led to Applegate falling into a depressive state. During a June episode of MeSsy, the actress said that she was "in a depression right now, which I don't think I've felt that for years. Like a real, fuck it all depression where it's kind of scaring me to a little bit because it feels really fatalistic. I'm trapped in like this darkness right now that I haven't felt...I don't even know how long, probably 20-something years."
"This is being really honest...I don't enjoy living," Applegate continued. "I don't enjoy it. I don't enjoy things anymore."
