Before & After: A classic yet modern bathroom makeover
The original bathroom in this Victorian home lacked character and felt very uninspiring. Now it's been redesigned as a bright modern family spa with plenty of storage that everyone loves spending time in.
Who lives here
Jenna Kilgas, head of business development at a pharmaceutical company, lives with her husband Ashley and their three children in a Victorian semi in Lincolnshire.
Before
'The bathroom was unwelcoming and underwhelming when we moved in,' says Jenna. 'We initially painted the walls but that wasn't enough to make it feel like the space we wanted, so we decided to go for a total change and to revamp everything.'
How did you get started?
JK: We knew we wanted the new bathroom to have a modern feel, but to reference the period of our Victorian property at the same time. Our priorities were to have a double basin, a freestanding bath and a large shower area, and to incorporate plenty of hidden storage and some splashes of green. When it came to planning the space, we decided to use the design service at Ripples. They listened to our ideas and took on board what we wanted to achieve and designed the room around that.
Was there much building work required?
JK: Yes! There were a lot of changes – in fact, everything was ripped out and replaced. All
of the tiles were removed and some of the wall collapsed in the process. We had a false wall installed in the shower and another behind the basins, which enabled us to create niches to serve as much-needed alcove storage.
Any challenges along the way?
JK: The bath tap couldn’t be positioned where we wanted as there had once been a fireplace hearth there which meant that there wasn't room to fit the pipes, so we had to move it. And as the floor was very uneven, tiling it wasn’t an easy task.
Tell us why you went for green...
JK: I’ve always loved the colour and used it in my previous bathroom, though it was a different shade. We liked the idea of the bath matching the basin unit, and the fact that this was something a bit different to our usual style. And as I was planning on displaying lots of plants in the bathroom, I thought the green shade would go perfectly.
What’s your favourite part of your new bathroom?
JK: Definitely the beautiful bath. It was quite a mission to get it into the room as it’s so heavy and we have a curved staircase. We’re also really happy with the sensor lighting, which lights the room up perfectly. In fact, we love it all – we wouldn’t change a thing.
