The Clever Hawaiian Roll Sandwich Hack I Wish I Discovered Sooner
With the Super Bowl just days away — whether you’re tuning in for the whole game or just the halftime show — you’ll want some tasty, comforting bites to enjoy. Thanks to a trending hack from an Instagram creator, you can easily make a delicious appetizer using Hawaiian rolls, ham, cheese, and a sweet and tangy brown sugar and Dijon mustard sauce. It’s quick, simple, and ideal for all of the sporty festivities.
MacKenzie Smith, author of the cookbook Grilled Cheese Social and known for her comfort food recipes, recently shared a simple trick for turning Hawaiian rolls into gooey, melty mini ham and cheese sandwiches. The video has already gained nearly 142K views, and it’s a fun idea if you’re looking for appetizer inspiration for the big game.
In the Instagram video, Smith starts by making a sweet and tangy sauce, combining butter, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce in a pan and cooking until smooth. She then pours half of the glaze into a casserole dish. Next, she places the bottom half of the Hawaiian rolls into the dish, layering on thinly sliced ham and Swiss cheese. After that, she adds the top half of the rolls and brushes the remaining sauce over the buns. Then, she bakes the sandwiches in a preheated 350°F oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the top is golden-brown and the filling is melted.
People quickly flooded the comments to praise this Hawaiian roll sandwich hack. One person wrote, “These are spectacular!” while another said, “Wow, these look incredible! What a delicious appetizer!”
Smith also shared a trick for turning Hawaiian rolls into mini chicken sandwiches. For this version the cookbook author stuffs the rolls with a saucy piece of boneless Buffalo chicken, showing just how versatile this simple bakery ingredient can be.
