Coach's Bow-Adorned Ode to New York Romance Is Still Grounded in Reality

There's a question that many heritage brands ask themselves: How do I resonate with the current generation? Few have unlocked the secret, with Coach emerging as one of the rare successes. Season after season, the label continues to affirm that this isn't your mother's Coach, thanks to the work of Creative Director Stuart Vevers.

"As a designer, it's always been my impulse to connect with the current generation," Vevers told Fashionista ahead of the brand's Fall 2024 show. "And it's not that I think that I understand it, it's just I'm doing my best to listen and to connect with what feels most important. I just feel like, for me, fashion is about looking forward. So if I'm not connected to some extent with the current generation, it doesn't feel right to me."

Coach is finally connecting with the cool kids; it's young and fresh while still maintaining its legacy status — and its Fall 2024 collection continues to explore this. It embraces both the unique romanticism and spontaneity of New York City, "a perfect setting for love stories," per the show notes.

A series of romantic-leaning pieces (the bows, the glazed taffeta, the ball-gown skirt silhouettes) feel like a departure for the brand, but the collection is still very much grounded in reality. Look no further than the styling: worn-in biker boots; layered handbags covered in charms; formal blazers layered atop casual hoodies.

"[I was thinking about] what are the things that give Coach its point of view?," Vevers told Fashionista. "For me, it was the things [that have] a certain down-to-earth quality…celebrating an imperfect feeling of pieces."

He continued: "When someone puts on a Coach jacket, I always want people to just instantly feel a bit cooler. And I think that comes from having a distinct, unique point of view." To that point, the outerwear is an undeniable highlight of the collection. Vevers also points out a "play between classicism" and "irreverence," as seen in the streamlined sweaters that unexpectedly feature charming motifs, be it a duck or crescent moon.

"I think about the place of fashion in the world today," Vevers said. "I think fashion at its best reflects the times we're living [in], and we are living in challenging times. As a designer, I'm sometimes torn between facing reality and using fashion to escape. But I've focused on facing the challenges and in a way trying to stay grounded and trying to stay connected to who we're creating for."
