Cooking Icon Mary Berry Said That Prince Philip "Really Knew What He Was Talking About" With Grilling
Queen Elizabeth may be celebrating her 70th year on the throne of England, but when it comes to cooking in Britain, it's Mary Berry who reigns supreme. A food writer, cook, and television personality, Berry might be best known to American fans for her stint as a judge on The Great British Bake Off (known here as The Great British Baking Show) but she's been an icon on the British food scene for decades—a position that has not only garnered her the honor of being appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) but has also seen her spend plenty of time with the royal family over the years.
At a recent event at the BFI Radio Times Festival, Berry shared a few anecdotes from her royal experiences, including the time she and Prince Philip shared grilling tips. At an intimate luncheon given by the Queen some time ago, she explained, she found herself seated next to the late Duke of Edinburgh, who Berry described as "very chatty." He told her that he was, "the expert on barbecues and when he was in Sandringham, he used the game and used to put stuffing in them." Apparently his skills impressed her, because she added, "He really knew what he was talking about."
During the talk, Berry also revealed that one of the highlights of that day had been getting to meet the Queen's famed corgis who she said were "running about" before they were finally taken away by a "chap with white gloves."
