The Second Part of The Crown's Final Season Will Drop in December

The Crown is back, but unlike all past seasons, the show's final chapter will arrive in two parts.

Season six of Peter Morgan's critically acclaimed royal drama premiered today, November 16, with four episodes depicting "a relationship blossoming between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences." In August 2023, producers of the show emphasized how much care they took in portraying Diana's death, saying that scenes were filmed with “enormous sensitivity.”

“The show might be big and noisy, but we’re not. We’re thoughtful people and we’re sensitive people. There were very careful, long conversations about how we were going to do it,” Suzanne Mackie said, per Deadline. “The audience will judge it in the end, but I think it’s been delicately, thoughtfully recreated. Elizabeth Debicki is an extraordinary actress and she was so thoughtful and considerate. She loved Diana. There’s a huge amount of respect from us all, I hope that’s evident.”

Part two of the Crown's final season will drop on December 14, 2023 with six additional episodes in which, "Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion. As she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairytale in William and Kate."

The streamer also confirmed today that the upcoming season will cover events from 1997 through 2005, though it should be noted that last November, the show was seen filming a flashback scene of Princess Margaret and then-Princess Elizabeth in 1945 appearing to celebrate Victory in Europe Day, marking the end of World War II.

The announcement of a two-part final season was coupled with a new teaser (above) in which we hear from the show's three Queens. "The crown is a symbol of permanence. It's something you are, not something you do," begins Claire Foy, who played Elizabeth II in seasons one and two. "Some portion of our natural selves is always lost. We have all made sacrifices. it is not a choice, it is a duty," continues Olivia Colman, who portrayed the British monarch in seasons three and four. And finally, Imelda Staunton, who plays the Queen in seasons five and six questions: "But what about the life I put aside? The woman I put aside."

In addition to Staunton, the majority of the cast from season five—including Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret—are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming episodes. Salim Daw and Khalid Abdalla will also return as Mohamed Al Fayed and Dodi Al Fayed, respectively. In part one of season six, Rufus Kampa will play Prince William and Fflyn Edwards will play Prince Harry. In part two, Ed McVey will play William, Luther Ford will play Harry, and Meg Bellamy will join the cast as a young Kate Middleton.
