Dad urges parents to dress their daughters in costumes that are #MoreThanCute this Halloween

Picking a Halloween costume – be it for yourself or your kid – isn’t as easy as it used to be.

As any girl can attest to, when it comes to costumes, the usual options tend to fall into the category of “cute” or “sexy.” But one dad is hoping to change that.

John Marcotte is the founder of Heroic Girls, an organization “dedicated to empowering girls by advocating for strong role models in alternative media — particularly comics.” He also happens to have two daughters. Knowing that Halloween was around the corner, he decided to make a call to parents to seek out costumes for their girls that are more than simply cute.

“When choosing a costume, boys are told they can be anything they want: brave, scary, smart, adventurous and more,” he explains. “The costumes designed for girls, on the other hand, tell them that no matter what they aspire to be, the only thing that society truly values is that they look ‘cute.’”

Using the hashtag #MoreThanCute, Marcotte hopes to encourage parents to break the cycle of gender stereotypes.

“We think girls dream just as big as boys. We think their potential is unlimited. We think that their costumes should be ‘more than cute,’” he says.
