Dad Wore a Pokemon Tie to Son's High School Graduation but Not for a Corny Gag

Dads are well-known — at least in the world of dad clichés — for gag ties and finding just the perfectly wrong moment to wear them. Robert Olivo’s decision to wear a Pokémon tie to his son’s high school graduation is not one of them.

See, 11 years ago, Dylan Olivo made his dad that hand-drawn tie for a first-grade project. So, when Dylan was graduating — cum laude, no less — the elder Olivo couldn’t resist bringing the tie back for another run. And Dylan couldn’t have been happier. So much so that he shared it on social media, and nearly brought part of the world to tears.

As Dylan Olivo informed Buzzfeed, he had an idea that his dad would bring the Pokemon artifact to graduation, but when he actually wore it he “was so happy when he saw it.”

So, too, were all the folks who caught wind of the gesture, particularly on Twitter. His original post received over 100,000 retweets and over 400,000 favorites.

With even a few celeb-status tweets chiming in:

Another person showed off her dad doing the same thing. Perhaps this will become a trend, or at least a way for conscientious fathers to find a reason to finally, after all those years, wear those hand-made ties.

Now that high school graduation is done, we can’t wait to see what Dad will wear to Dylan’s college ceremony.
