Who is Daeron, the mysterious Targaryen sibling mentioned in HotD?

House of the Dragon is back for season two and we're diving straight into bloody battles, savage killings, and some classic Targaryen family drama. And speaking of those Targaryens, it turns out there's one more we've missed out from our family tree. Episode two casually mentions the existence of Daeron Targaryen, but who is this mysterious (presumably) white haired child?

There was a lot going on in episode two of the new series, so you'll be forgiven for not hearing this blink and you'll miss it detail. However, during a conversation between Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and her father Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Otto casually mentions Prince Daeron. He mentions the prince is currently at the Hightower home in Oldtown and that he "takes more kindly to instruction" than his older brother Aegon.

However, that's all we get of this mystery child. Intrigued to know more? Consider this your 101 on Daeron Targaryen.

Who is Daeron Targaryen?

Daeron Targaryen is a character from the Fire and Blood novel by George R.R. Martin which the TV series is based on. Daeron is the third son of Viserys and Alicent Targaryen, and appears to be the youngest child of the four.

In the book he is known as the "gentlest" of the brothers and was born shortly after Rhaenyra's eldest son Jacaerys. In order to prevent his eldest grandson and his youngest child not getting along, Viserys suggested the pair share a wet nurse in order to bond them. However, his efforts were in vain and just like his elder siblings he also resented his nephews.

In the novel, when he was 12 years old Daeron was sent by his mother to live with his mother's relative Lord Ormund Hightower and serve as a cupbearer and squire. Like his siblings Daeron also had a dragon who was called Tasserion.

Why is Daeron Targaryen missing from House of the Dragon?

While not necessarily a major character in the books, Daeron still has a part to play in the Dance of the Dragons, and yet he's mysteriously absent from the TV adaptation.

All we've heard so far about him is the little snippet from Otto during episode of season two in episode two that Daeron is currently in Oldtown.

It's not exactly made clear in the series as to why Daeron is separated from his siblings and mother, however, in the novel, he does return to take part in a battle to support the Greens claim to the Iron Throne. So maybe we will get an appearance from him later on?
