Daniel Kaluuya's 'Barney' Movie Described as an "A24-Type" "Surrealistic" Film
Although many details of Daniel Kaluuya's Barney movie are still under wraps, Mattel Films executive Kevin McKeon recently gave a brief description of what audiences can expect from the upcoming film.
In a recent interview with The New Yorker, McKeon called the movie "surrealistic" and compared it to a Charlie Kaufman or Spike Jonze-directed title. “We’re leaning into the Millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids,” he said. “It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being 30-something, growing up with Barney—just the level of disenchantment within the generation.”
He added that he billed the project to possible partners as an "A24-type" film, noting, “It would be so daring of us, and really underscore that we’re here to make art.”
Aside from Barney and the forthcoming Barbie, 13 additional Mattel films and 45 more are currently in development. The slate ranges from He-Man and Polly Pocket, as well as a Major Matt Mason title that will supposedly star Tom Hanks.
