Daryl Sabara is getting real about his path to sobriety.

During an appearance on his wife Meghan Trainor's podcast Workin' On It, the Spy Kids alum, 30, opened up about advice he received that inspired him to quit drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.

"One piece of advice that my therapist gave me that was so helpful was [that] she just said, 'If you want to be on your A-game, maybe consider full sobriety,'" he said. "I was like, 'What the f***! Of course, I want to be on my A-game.'"

That was the moment, he explained, when he decided to quit all substances — even though he says he never had bad experiences with cannabis, in particular.

"[Quitting marijuana] was hard for me because there was no repercussions of weed," he explained. "I never had like a bad experience on weed. It was only great."

Still, the advice from his therapist "really sparked something in me to go like, 'OK, you know what? Even though weed is not really bad for me right now, I don't need to keep testing it out to wait to get bad or to get in a bad spot. So, let's just try this full sobriety thing.'"

While the process hasn't been easy, he says it's welcomed other opportunities for self-discovery.

"I'm figuring out that being alone is kind of a trigger for me," he shared. "I know now that when I am alone to be ready for the little bastard inside of my head to be like, 'Hey buddy, it's just us now. What are we going to do?' And that's huge to know that it's coming, instead of just being like, going to booze or weed."

Sabara and Trainor, who share 1-year-old son Riley, have never shied away from speaking about their private lives — including Trainor's "nightmare" breastfeeding experience after giving birth.

When speaking to People magazine in December, Trainor, 28, revealed that they want to expand their family.

"I'm trying to make four children, so I've got to get on it!" the singer said at the time, noting that after welcoming Riley, she felt unstoppable.

"After having a baby, I was like, there's nothing I can’t do," she said. "So now I'm just trying to knock off all my dreams on my dream list."
