Daylight saving time 2025: Find out when to 'spring forward' your clocks
Over the past few weeks you might have noticed that it’s starting to get that bit lighter in the mornings and evenings, with spring well and truly on its way.
And as we welcome the new season, it will soon be time for the clocks to change.
You might be familiar with the handy “spring forward, fall back” saying, which is a surprisingly good way to remember whether the clocks go forward or back, with fall representing autumn here in the UK.
We’ve been changing the clocks for well over 100 years now. It all started when British builder William Willett (who just so happens to be the great-great-grandfather of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin) proposed daylight saving back in 1907. Sadly, he didn't live long enough to see its introduction, with the Summertime Act being passed by Parliament in 1916, one year after his death.
But, twice a year since then, we’ve moved the clocks forward and back depending on the time of year.
What day do the clocks go forward in 2025?
The clocks change on the last Sunday of March every year in the UK, with them moving forward by one hour.
For 2025, the clocks go forward on Sunday March 30th at 1am, and this marks the official beginning of British Summer Time (BST). While we do lose an hour in bed, it means that it will start getting lighter for longer in the evenings.
What day do the clocks go back in 2025?
Later in the year, as we move into autumn/winter, the clocks go back on Sunday October 26th at 2am. Any sleep missed from March evens out too as, instead of losing an hour, you get an extra hour in bed that morning.
When the clocks do go back, the UK returns to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) until March of 2026.
Is the UK going to stop changing the clocks?
In March 2019 the European Parliament backed a proposal to end the practice of changing the clocks in European Union states. This was before Brexit, when the UK was still a part of the EU.
According to Royal Museums Greenwich, “initially the plan was for EU nations to change their clocks for the last time in 2021, but the legislation has stalled in recent years. For the time being, EU nations continue to implement seasonal time changes.”
Currently, there are no plans for the UK to stop changing the clocks twice yearly.
When is daylight saving in the UK?
Daylight saving takes place at the same time of year, every year. While the actual date will differ, it always happens on the last Sunday in March.
The reason it’s called 'daylight saving' is because we essentially sacrifice some daylight in the mornings to enjoy more daylight in the evenings. So, ultimately, the sun will set a bit later each day during this period.
When does daylight saving end?
Taking place at the end of October each year, daylight saving ends with sunrise and sunset being about one hour earlier on October 26th 2025, than it was the day before. As the days pass there will ultimately be more light in the morning and less light in the evening.
