My mom’s ride-or-die winter staple was always a peacoat; I couldn’t tell you how many times I’d see her scurry off to work wearing the timeless top layer. In my young mind, it was the epitome of class, sophistication, and fashion. Then, one magical day, she offered to get me my very own. Gasp! To this day, I still rely on the cold-weather essential—and apparently, so does Demi Moore.

The Substance actress was spotted in New York City wearing an all-black ensemble featuring a cozy sweater, flowy skirt, and cool-girl loafers. Already, there’s so much to discuss, like how her top mimics Jennifer Garner’s and where she got her editor-approved shoes. And don’t even get me started on the cutest accessory known to man—her tiny pup, Pilaf, who was peaking through a sea of fabric. Still, I want to chat about one thing: her ageless coat.

Her coat might as well be a prerequisite for chilly temperatures, since it’s snugly yet sophisticated. Whether she wore it with denim or a gala-ready gown, it would hold its place as a refined separate.

But just because her overcoat is chic doesn’t mean it’s difficult to wear. In fact, it’s one of the easiest and most versatile closet staples you can own—and it pairs with an array of styles. It’s lowkey, too, never pulling away from your look, but offering the perfect finishing touch.

Black peacoats aren’t going anywhere, either. While the style’s role has undoubtedly changed since the 1800s, the classic look has stayed in mainstream fashion. So, if there’s ever been an item to drop some serious cash on, it’s one that will stand the test of time. However, you can snag a Moore-inspired coat for just $40, including versions from Lauren Ralph Lauren and J.Crew.

When it’s all said and done, everyone could benefit from a traditional black peacoat, so make like Moore (and my mom) by shopping the below options.
