Denver Zoo announces birth of red-necked wallaby

Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The Denver Zoo announced the birth of a red-necked wallaby, the first baby to be born in the facility's new Down Under habitat.

The zoo said the baby is estimated to have been born Sept. 1, 2024, to red-necked wallabies Adelaide and Cricket, but was only recently seen peeking out from its mother's pouch.

The pouch is "a marvelous marsupial adaptation that allows joeys to grow from the size of a jellybean into a fully developed wallaby, all while staying safe and cozy with mom," the zoo said on social media.

"Our Animal Care Specialists are keeping a close eye on mom and baby and are happy to report that both are doing well," the post said. "They've also spotted the joey peeking out more frequently, a sign that it's becoming curious about the world beyond the pouch."

The joey is expected to start emerging fully from Adelaide's pouch in the coming months.
