Disney+ Star launches in Canada: 15 of the best movies and TV shows to stream

Entertainment junkies, get ready - there's a new way to stream some of your favourite titles in Canada. Beginning today, Disney+ has launched a new channel called Star — which is available via access through their existing app.

Geared towards older audiences than the rest of Disney+'s offerings, Star is bringing forth a whole new selection of TV series, movies and originals to Canadian subscribers. In fact, there will be more than 150 TV series and 500 movies at launch, which is expected to increase to 800 by the end of 2021.

To make sure that Disney+ remains a family-friendly service, there will be new parental controls put in place to restrict access to mature content.

Fans will get to dive back into some of their favourite sit-coms like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Family Guy," as well as stream several award-winning films like "The Shape of Water" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri." The brand will also be launching exclusive Star Original content, starting with the "Love, Simon" spin-off series "Love, Victor."

"With this addition of Star, we believe we're making Disney+ that much more compelling for older teens and adults across Canada," Greg Mason, VP, Marketing of Walt Disney Studios Canada, shared with Yahoo! Canada. "It's so nice to be able to dive into the library of things that you either grew up on, or you want to share with various family members that haven't seen it."

New Canadian customers can subscribe to Disney+ for $11.99 per month, or $119 annually. Existing subscribers will still be able to hold on to the current prices for six months, until August 22, 2021 when the price change takes effect on their monthly or annual renewal date.

Television

Criminal Minds

This 2005 police procedural crime drama was a popular television show among fans, and ran for 15 seasons. The series follows an elite team of FBI profilers, known as the Behavioral Analysis Unit, who analyze the country's most twisted criminal minds, and try to stop the next crime by anticipating the criminal's next moves.

8 Simple Rules

This 2002 sitcom is another classic, originally starring the late John Ritter and Katey Sagal as middle-class parents Paul and Cate Hennessy, who raise their three kids — Bridget (Kaley Cuoco), Kerry (Amy Davidson) and Rory (Martin Spanjers).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Fans will enjoy diving back into the cult classic American supernatural drama, which ran for 7 seasons. The series follows Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who tries to live a normal high school life while embracing her destiny as a vampire slayer.

Homeland

Emmy-winning drama "Homeland" follows CIA officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), who is on the hunt for an American prisoner who might be a terrorist. Her main suspect is Marine Nicholas Brody (Damien Lewis), who is released from hostage after eight years. The series ran for 8 seasons and also won the 2011 and 2012 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series.

Black-ish

This critically acclaimed 2014 series follows an upper middle class African-American family led by Andre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross). Together with their four children — Zoey (Yara Shahidi), Andre Jr. (Marcus Scribner), Jack (Miles Brown), and Diane (Marsai Martin) — they navigate personal and sociopolitical issues, while learning about their Black culture. The show has received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series.

How I Met Your Mother

Another fan-favourite series finding a new home on Star is the comedy "How I Met Your Mother," which ran from 2005 to 2014. It follows a group of five 30-somethings in Manhattan as they search for love: Ted (Josh Radnor), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Marshall (Jason Segel), Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris).

The Killing

This crime series ran for 4 seasons and has an 8.2 IMDB score. When the body of 17-year-old Rosie Larsen is found, two police officers Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) and Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) lead the investigation and uncover many shocking truths.

Movies

The Shape of Water

Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water" earned 13 nominations at the 2018 Oscars, and won four, including Best Picture, and Best Director. The story follows Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a lonely mute janitor, who works at a high-security government laboratory in 1962 Baltimore. The facility soon imprisons a new specimen they call an asset (Doug Jones), and the plot soon becomes a whimsical fairytale revolving around the bittersweet romance between Elisa and the creature.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

This 2017 crime drama was an award season favourite, earning multiple nominations and wins. The film follows Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand), a Missouri woman who rents three billboards to call attention to her daughter's unsolved rape and murder. It has a 90 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Deadpool

Based on the Marvel Comics, "Deadpool" is the eighth film in the "X-Men" film franchise. Wisecracking Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is left disfigured after an experiment by evil scientist Ajax (Ed Skrein), but the rogue experiment transforms him into Deadpool, a hero with healing powers that he uses to track down the people who ruined his life.

The Proposal

Another Ryan Reynolds comedy to watch, but this time he leads in a rom-com with co-star Sandra Bullock. When New York editor Margaret (Bullock) faces deportation to Canada, she convinces her assistant Andrew to marry her in return for a long overdue promotion. In order to make this deal look convincing to the immigration officials, they take a trip to his hometown in Alaska.

Die Hard franchise

You'll now be able to stream all five instalments on Star, including "Die Hard," "Die Hard 2," "Die Hard with a Vengenance," "Live Free or Die Hard" and "A Good Day to Die Hard." The action films follows New York City cop John McClane as he fights against different enemies while trying to save his family.

The Devil Wears Prada

This classic comedy takes you into the cut-throat world of the fashion industry, as it follows Andy (Anne Hathaway), a young graduate aspiring to be a journalist, who lands the job of an assistant to one of the city's biggest magazine editors: the ruthless and demanding Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep).

The Hate U Give

Based on the 2017 young adult novel of the same name by Angie Thomas, this powerful drama stars Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby and Anthony Mackie. Starr Carter (Stenberg), an African-American teenager, witnesses the shooting of her best friend by the police and is left traumatized. She faces pressure from various communities and tries to bring justice for her friend.

127 Hours

Directed by Danny Boyle, this 2010 biographical survival drama tells the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston's (played by James Franco) shocking ordeal to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah. This film earned several award nominations, including an Oscar nod for Best Picture, and has a 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
