How to dispose of Christmas trees in Tri-Cities with pickup instructions, drop off spots

Residents left their cut live Christmas trees for recycling at the Big Cross Sports Complex on Road 36 just off Argent Road in Pasco in 2020. They are then chipped and spread across the trails to keep dust down.

Christmas has come to a close, leaving behind plenty of decorations to put away and garbage to throw out. Among the trash is the now barren Christmas tree, having served its purpose during yesterday’s celebrations.

But how do you dispose of your tree in Tri-Cities, and where?

Here are some options.

Christmas tree disposal in Tri-Cities

Depending on where you live, you may have several options for tree disposal.

Pasco

You can drop off bare trees for free at the Tri-Cities Cross Country Running Course in Pasco. These trees will be turned into wood chips to improve the running path surface, according to the City of Pasco.

Trees will be accepted between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Jan. 20.

Basin Disposal can also pick up trees on the curb, so long as they are undecorated and cut down to 4-foot pieces. Depending on the pickup details for your home, this will either be free or the price of one extra yard, which will vary by area.

Kennewick

Trees can be taken to the Waste Management Transfer Station at the corner of Ely Street and 27th Ave. through January, according to the City of Kennewick. Bare trees will be accepted for free during hours of operation:

  • Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Friday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Alternatively, you can call Waste Management to schedule a bulky item pickup at 509-582-5121. The pickup costs around $20.

Richland

In Richland, regular garbage collection will take trees during the first two weeks of January. Residents are asked to cut trees over 6-feet long in half.

All Benton County residents can use the Waste Management Transfer Station in Kennewick as well.
