The compact alternative to a treadmill or elliptical currently has more than 38,6000 on TikTok using the hashtag "mini stepper" and have earned millions of views for being an easy and low-impact way to get your steps in without heading outdoors. But do mini steppers really help you achieve your fitness goals?
"For those who get most of their exercise from walking and want something a little more challenging, this could be a great progression," said Barry Vincent an award-winning personal trainer from Hamilton, Ont.
In an interview with Yahoo Canada, Vincent cautioned TikTok fans to be mindful of the content they consume, since some videos with the highest view-count were paid partnerships. "To me that's a bit of a red flag, but I do think the product could help the right people," he explained.

How does a mini stepper work?
A mini stepper (sometimes called stair stepper) is a piece of exercise equipment that simulates the movement of walking or climbing stairs while remaining stationary. It's a compact alternative to an elliptical, stair climber or treadmill that helps you engage your lower body and core while you move. Although you might not get the same level of workout as you would by running, some mini steppers include resistance bands that you can use for a full body workout.
Who would benefit from a mini stepper?
Aside from being ideal for people who enjoy walking or are looking for low-impact exercises, Vincent says mini steppers could benefit people who like to mix up their workouts.
"For experienced exercisers, something like this could be a great tool for getting in some extra low-moderate intensity exercise without having to buy something with a larger footprint like a treadmill or spin bike," Vincent said. "It could also fit well into a circuit along 3-4 other exercises for a full body sweat session."

Although mini steppers can be a welcomed addition to home set-ups, Vincent said the unit isn't ideal for older populations or people with stability or balance issues. Unlike a treadmill or elliptical, mini steppers don't have any hand grips or a console to grab onto if you suddenly lose balance and poses a safety issue.
Do mini steppers really work?
The short answer: Kind of.
Mini steppers can definitely help you reach your daily step goals, but they might not deliver the biggest calorie burn.
While some of the influencers and videos on TikTok say mini stepper workouts can lead to weight loss, Vincent says some of those claims are likely exaggerated.
"Combined with the right diet and lifestyle changes, [mini steppers] could certainly help speed up the [weight loss] process," he said.
