It Doesn't Get Any Smoother Than Selena Gomez's Vintage Ponytail

Remember the other day when we were celebrating the triumphant return of Selena Gomez's curtain bangs after her February fringe had seemingly disappeared into her hair for several weeks? Well, they're doing a disappearing act again, and I must say, I don't know if I've ever seen such an exceptional blending job. But that's only one reason Gomez's latest 'do is next-level smooth.
To help kick off Mental Health Awareness Month, Gomez attended the annual Rare Beauty Mental Health Summit on Wednesday, May 1. There, she spoke in front of a live audience with U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy for a conversation about loneliness and isolation that was broadcast to her beauty brand's TikTok audience.
In addition to continuing the Rare Impact Fund's and Rare Beauty's efforts to bring awareness and empathy to mental health topics, Gomez spent the event looking absolutely stunning in a cream-colored dress with a dramatically gathered, off-the-shoulder detail. Her Rare Beauty makeup, done by Hung Vanngo, kept with the neutral tones and glowy finish.
But, as I hinted at before, the pièce de résistance of this look is an almost impossibly smooth, retro ponytail, which was styled by Orlando Pita. And I don't just mean the base of the ponytail, which is, in fact, outrageously sleek and showing no sign of any bangs that might be blended in. The length of the ponytail, which starts high at the back of her head, is subtly, loosely curled, and so wonderfully thick that it almost seems like one gigantic ringlet. And that ringlet could not possibly be shinier.

Getty Images“I started with Orlando Pita Play Atmos-Shield and blew her hair dry," Pita tells Allure. “I then scraped it back for a high ponytail.” He used a light hairspray — specifically his Climate Change Humidity Blocking Hair Spray — “to make it look sleek, polished, and clean.” After securing the ponytail with a hook elastic, he used a 1.25-inch curling iron to curl it in about six sections. (So, no, not one big ringlet after all.)
