A downtown Belleville bakery adds an unlikely menu to its offerings. Here’s what to know

Sugar High Bakery & Café in downtown Belleville is the bakery that has it all: coffee, sweets, breakfast sandwiches and wraps.

And sushi.

Yes, you read that right. Sugar High on East Main Street now offers sushi.

Owner Amber Weiss said that she’s wanted to use the space of her business at night for a while now. However, she felt that being open later for just coffee and dessert didn’t make sense.

Coming up with ideas for evening hours jibed with the timing of the nearby Seven restaurant closing. Weiss decided that offering sushi was a good idea.

She told her husband, “‘Sugar High Sushi’ sounds so cute.”

Sugar High made its sushi debut Friday, June 21, serving it up again the next day.

Based on many of the comments on Facebook, the sushi offerings went over really well, and many others are looking forward to trying it.

The debut of a sushi menu at Sugar High comes soon after the recent opening of Chaos Sushi Bar & Grill at 126 E. Main St.

Sugar High’s sushi menu can be found on the business’ Facebook page.

Included are plenty of appetizers, maki (seaweed outside) and uramaki (seaweed inside) rolls, nigiri and sashimi, sushi bowls, sushi burritos and specialty rolls.

There are vegan options too, and I am totally on board with that.

Weiss said many of her friends are vegan, and she’s gotten into a habit of considering their needs when they get together for meals.

I’m going for that vegan California roll as soon as I can. And that’s just to start.

Customers are not limited to sushi during Sugar High’s new evening hours. Weiss said that coffee and treats are available at this time as well.

During that first weekend, some folks came in for just coffee, and some sushi diners ordered dessert too.

Sugar High Bakery & Café opened in fall 2020 and offers a variety of sweet treats – cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, muffins, brownies and more – breakfast, lunch and coffee. Vegan options are available.

Sugar High is located at 100 E. Main St. in Belleville. Hours are 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Sushi hours are 5-9 p.m. Thursday-Saturday.
