Dual-concept restaurant from Topeka taking over vacant Planet Sub spot at Central & Maize

The owners of Tuptim Thai are bringing a new restaurant concept to Wichita.

Actually, if we’re counting, they’re bringing two new concepts.

Johnny Chandra says that he and his partners have leased the former Planet Sub space at Central and Maize and plan to open a dual-concept restaurant there.

One of them is Crispy & Co, which will specialize in chicken wings and tenders plus fries. Some of the dishes will have an Asian influence: For example, the menu includes Korean chicken wings, and among the many sauce flavors customers can choose from are Go Chu Jang, bulgogi and soy garlic.

The other concept is Hanebe, which is pronounced “honeybee.” It offers fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies and acai bowls made with various fruits and toppings.

The two concepts will share the space, and customers will order from each at the same register. The partners also have a combo Crispy & Co./Hanebe at 2855 SW Wanamaker Road in Topeka. It opened about a year ago and has been popular, Chandra said.

The new Wichita restaurant should be open by late November or early December. Zach Zerbe of Landmark Commercial Real Estate represented the landlords in the deal.

The co-branded Crispy & Co./Hanebe restaurant will be the fourth (and fifth, technically) that Chandra and his partners have opened in Wichita. They started with Tuptim Thai, 2121 N. Rock Road, in October 2018 followed by Mirai Ramen & Sushi, 6524 E. 37th St. North, in April 2023. In July, they opened a Tuptim Thai Express at 1317 N. Maize Road.

In addition to their co-branded Crispy & Co./Hanebe in Topeka, the owners also have a Tuptim Thai restaurant there.
