The ‘Meghan Effect‘ is in full swing with royal fans flocking to bag the Duchess of Sussex’s sell-out looks one public engagement at a time.

But eagle-eyed fashion followers have spotted something surprising about Meghan Markle‘s newfound Buckingham Palace-approved wardrobe.

It seems the duchess wears shoes that are at least one size too big for her. Whether it’s the £550 Aquazzura lace-up heels she donned for the couple’s engagement photocall or her sell-out Jimmy Choo numbers (photographed above), she is rarely seen wearing close-fit shoes.

So what’s the possible reason behind the bizarre habit.

Fashion expert Harriet Davey says: “Celebs often go a size up, or even two, in the shoe department when they’re at an event or on the red carpet and it’s for one reason we can all relate to – to avoid blisters.”

“There’s nothing worse than uncomfortable shoes (we’ve all been there on a night out) and when celebs like Meghan are wearing heels for a long period of time their feet can often swell up. The swelling can cause blisters and in the long run bunions.”

But with recent high-profile events including her joint engagement with Queen Elizabeth II to Meghan’s Royal Ascot debut, how does the Duchess of Sussex ensure that her shoes don’t slip off?

Davey explains: “A trick of the trade is to stuff the toe with padding like tissue or cotton wool, and this can be taken out once they feel like they need a bit more room in their shoes.”
