The Duke and Duchess of Sussex release statement regarding the LA wildfires
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are sharing resources for those affected by the ongoing wildfires in Southern California.
Harry and Meghan released a statement last night responding to several fires that have ignited throughout the state. In Meghan’s hometown of Los Angeles, several fires have cumulatively burned nearly 30,000 acres, forcing the evacuation of at least 100,000 residents and leading to the deaths of five people.
“In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighbourhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centres, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life,” the statement read. “A state of emergency has been issued. If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas.”
The couple went on to list various organisations that are working on providing support and assistance to fire victims, including José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen, CAL FIRE and the LA Fire Department Foundation, the Animal Wellness Foundation, the Compton Cowboys, Airbnb and 211LA, Baby2baby, American Red Cross, and All Power Books.
They also listed other ways that community members can help their neighbours in need. “If a friend, loved one or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do – and be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbours to see if they need help evacuating,” their statement continued. “Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys and clothing, and other essentials.”
Harry and Meghan currently live in Montecito, a town in Santa Barbara County located nearly 100 miles from LA, with their two children, Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3. While there are no active wildfires currently near them, they and the rest of Montecito may face a power shutoff due to the area’s high fire risk, according to The Independent.
