Ah, the ‘crayon on the wall’ work of art. A rite of passage for all parents! As gifted as surely all of our little artists are, I’d say most of us probably want it off the wall and back to the paint color we picked.

There are quite a few different methods floating around online, some involving hot clothes irons and blow dryers to melt the wax. But seeing as most modern crayons are washable, it’s not that complicated of a problem. I don’t even need to pull out chemicals or mix up my own essential oil and baking soda scrub. I reach for a simple solution for what is a pretty simple problem.

Use a Magic Eraser to remove crayon off of the wall

A Magic Eraser, or generic melamine sponge, is the easiest and quickest way to get crayon off of a wall. I purchase extra thick ones in bulk so I have them on hand for all sorts of cleaning jobs. Once the sponge activated, they remove all traces of wax and color with very little elbow grease.

It’s as easy as 1, 2. That’s it!

  • Wet the sponge and squeeze out any excess water.

  • Gently scrub away the markings.

It’s always smart to spot test a new cleaning method in a hidden place, but I’ve yet to have any issues with it affecting my paint, even in a rental house with flat wall paint. (Clearly the property manager didn’t have kids.) The sponge crumbled slightly as it wasn’t gliding over the surface. And I had to pick up the sponge after each wipe to move it in one direction rather than scrubbing back and forth. There was just a little more friction. But no damage to the finish or color of the actual paint. And no issues on an eggshell finish paint that I had in another home either.
