EastEnders begins Alfie Moon cancer storyline

EastEnders spoilers follow.

Alfie Moon has learned he could have prostate cancer in EastEnders.

Earlier this week, soap bosses confirmed an issue-based storyline for Shane Richie where his character will be diagnosed with prostate cancer following a recent injury at the hands of son Tommy Moon.

Tuesday's (August 15) episode started setting up the storyline as Alfie faced residual pain in the same area where he was struck by his son and was urged by Phil Mitchell to get himself checked out.

Alfie tried to smooth things over with Tommy, yet remained on his wrong side when he tried to block him from hanging out with friend Perry.

When Phil caught wind of Tommy's outburst, he confided in Alfie that Tommy had been violent before with Kat. They decided to get him involved with the local boxing club to channel his frustrations.

Tommy got into the ring to spar against another boy his own age, and when he came out on the losing end, he had a moment of realisation and apologised to Alfie.

All throughout the match, Phil noticed Alfie was openly grimacing in pain. He encouraged Alfie to get his injury checked out at the hospital once Tommy had gone home.

Alfie followed through on Phil's suggestion but received alarming news when the nurse found blood in his urine. Following a CT scan, Alfie had to brace himself for some startling news.

He was told that the CT scan showed an enlarged prostate, and while it can be common for men Alfie's age, he needed additional blood tests right away.

"Mr Moon, given your scan and the blood in your urine, we need to rule out the possibility of prostate cancer," he was told.

There will be more to come later this week in a storyline that has been devised in collaboration with Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillian Cancer Support. Viewers will see Alfie and his family come to terms with his diagnosis in a long-term story.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
