A new day has arrived and Labour leader Keir Starmer has become Prime Minister, following a landslide victory for his party.

On Friday, Starmer reacted to the news of his victory, describing today as a ‘new dawn’ and ushered in the ‘sunlight of hope’ on the country after a 14-year Conservative ruling, which has now seen them face the party’s worst electoral defeat since 1835.

Rishi Sunak, the former prime minister, apologised to the nation and his party colleagues following the defeat, noting outside Number 10 earlier this morning: ‘"To the country I would like to say first and foremost I am sorry.

‘I have given this job my all but you have sent a clear message that the government of the UK must change, and yours is the judgement that matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss.’

When does Keir Starmer officially becoming prime minister?

On Friday, Starmer officially became the new Prime Minister and will have a busy day ahead of him (presumably on little to no sleep). He'll first be invited to visit the King to form a new government.

Sunak, meanwhile, will have already bid farewell to his Number 10 staff and offered his resignation to the King at Buckingham Palace as the new senior political staff will enter Downing Street via a side door on Horse Guards Parade so that they’re ready to welcome the new PM.

What will Keir Starmer do on his first day in office?

Today, he will address the country and then set to work at 10 Downing Street with a full day of briefings. He’ll also share information with civil servants about national security, the key matters ahead and create an immediate plan of action.

One of the first tasks he’ll undertake is writing letters to the commanders of the UK’s four nuclear submarines, providing them with instructions for what to do in the event of a nuclear strike, which will be used instead of the Sunak’s previous instructions.

Starmer will also begin appointing ministers, such as the chancellor of the exchequer, as well as junior roles. This process can take several days to complete so expect many people going in and out of the Number 10 door this week.

As for his living arrangements, Starmer’s family will set about moving into Number 11 Downing Street – the official residence of the PM – as Sunk’s family vacates the building.

When will the UK have a new parliament?

It’s likely that Starmer’s new MPs will be sworn in on Tuesday July 9 in order of seniority. The Commons will also elect its new speaker.

However, don’t expect change overnight. No significant parliamentary and legislative work can come into force before the first king’s speech, which – in the addition of the state opening of parliament – are due to take place on Wednesday July 17.
