Meet Philodendron bipinnatifidum. It’s a real showstopper, plus it taught me a valuable lesson about houseplants – specifically, dealing with pests. I’ve always grown plants without pesticides in the garden, but until a few years ago I was using them on my indoor collections, waging a seemingly neverending war on pests.

My philodendron was particularly vulnerable to infestations. One day I realised I needed to adopt the same approach to indoor plants as I do to those in the garden. I don’t use pesticides and, instead, focus on overall plant health – ample light, regular feeding, watering only when the soil is dry. I also shower or hose down my philodendron and wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.

Philodendron bipinnatifidum (horsehead philodendron) care tips:

• Light

Philodendron bipinnatifidum thrives in bright, direct sunlight for at least three to four hours a day.

• Watering and feeding

Water when the pot feels dry, and feed every other watering with a liquid fertiliser. Adding fine bark to the soil aids drainage.

By focusing on overall plant care, you can grow a beautiful Philodendron bipinnatifidum – without pesticides – that will look stunning in your home.
