Erewhon Is Selling A $19 Strawberry & People Have STRONG Feelings
Unless you live under a rock, it's hard not to hear the commotion about celeb-loved, pricey LA grocery store Erewhon. The store is constantly churning out celebrity-backed health smoothies (the latest Kasey Musgraves collab is amazing) and is always making headlines for its expensive, trendy products. The latest eye-opener? A $19 strawberry. You read that right—a single strawberry.
Now, overpriced designer fruit is nothing new. Head to the shopping malls in Tokyo and you'll find yourself surrounded by $12 apples (I once fell victim to buying one of these. Spoiler alert: it tasted like any other apple.) and pricey pears. The brand Oishii has made a name for itself shelling out sweet designer strawberries at $2 a piece. But $19? That's a new low...or high, as most see it.
A local LA influencer recently posted her reactions to the taste of the organic berry, from luxury Japanese retailer Elly Amai, and the internet is up in arms over this new addition to the supermarket.
"Watching from district 12," one comment stated, a punny reference to Hunger Games.
"Who else thinks Erewhon is a social experiment to see what people will spend money on?" questioned another. And these were some of the kinder comments.
"Erewhon is honestly so embarrassing," "The waste of plastic is crazy," "America is the biggest scam," "Babe wake up," wrote some others.
This commenter pointed out the irony in today's climate: "People can't afford eggs and then there are people spending $20 on a single strawberry 😭 I hate it here."
"I guarantee it tasted like a normal strawberry with a sprinkle of placebo," one joker wrote.
After scrolling through the comment section for an embarrassing amount of time, I have yet to find a single positive reaction. As one person succinctly put it, "You didn't influence any of us to spend $19 on one strawberry."
Verdict's out, folks. No one asked for this.
