Even Queen Letizia Is a Meryl Streep Fan
Each year, the Princess Asturias Award recognizes notable figures in the humanities, sciences, and public affairs. Named after the Princess of Asturias—the title of the heir to the Spanish throne, which is currently Princess Leonor—the awards are a major event on the Spanish royal family's annual calendar. This year, those awardees included none other than Meryl Streep.
"I am very honored to receive this prestigious prize from one of the most deeply gifted countries and cultures in the world," Streep said in a statement April when the award was announced. "My sincere thanks to Their Majesties and Her Royal Highness and I very much look forward to meeting them in October, and to spending time in their beautiful country."
Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar, who nominated Streep, said, "Few actresses in American film history have the versatility of Meryl Streep, an actress with a wide range of registers and a mastery of all genres, including comedy, drama and musicals, among others. She does it all so well and all so naturally and truthfully. Meryl Streep is a truly worthy recipient of this year’s Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts."
Today, Streep and the other winners, including Eliud Kipchoge, Haruki Murakami, Bonnie Bassler, and Everett Peter Greenberg, were congratulated by the Spanish royal family at the Reconquista Hotel in Oviedo, Spain. In announcing her award, the jury unanimously agreed "to confer the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts on American actress Meryl Streep, for dignifying the art of acting and ensuring that ethics and coherence transcend through her work, with the virtue of emphasizing that human beings, and specifically women, must resound and attract attention on the basis of their uniqueness, of their being different."
The jury added: "Over five decades, Meryl Streep has built up a brilliant career of successive performances in which she brings life to richly complex female characters, which invite the viewer to reflect and form a critical spirit. The honesty and responsibility she brings to her choice of roles, at the service of inspiring and exemplary narratives, reach out beyond the screen and stage thanks to her impeccable acting technique, equipped only with gestures, voice and gaze. A tireless activist for equality, with her talent and attention to detail, she has allowed different generations to enjoy unforgettable performances, gaining the respect that this great art form deserves."
Earlier this week, Streep was in conversation with Antonio Banderas during the 'Sin Guion' conference, which takes place during the Princess of Asturias awards.
She also met with acting students of the Superior School of Dramatic Arts (ESAD) in Gijon.
