As an astrologer and psychotherapist, one of my favourite parts about astrology is the house system. So often, people get so caught up with their Star, Moon, or Rising signs that they don't realise that they have all 12 zodiac signs somewhere within themselves, and each sign is important. See, your birth chart is divided into 12 sections called Houses, and each House corresponds with a different zodiac sign. Your Rising sign always appears on the cusp of the 1st House, setting the blueprint for the rest of the houses.

You might know that your Sun sign represents your purpose and your Moon sign represents your emotional self. Once you begin assessing your Rising sign, you've reached the front door of your astrological mansion. Yes, that's right, your birth chart is basically like a mansion. The planets are your appliances, and the zodiac signs are the interior designers that dictate how the facets of your personhood get expressed. If you have access to your birth time and a passion for personal development, then you should run, not walk, to understand the blueprint of your cosmic castle.

How do you find your 1st House?

Your 1st House's zodiac sign will always fall in the same zodiac sign as your Rising sign (also called your Ascendant). One of the first things you need to do to figure out your 1st House's location (placement within your birth chart), residents (planets, luminaries, and other astrological points like your Midheaven), and visitors (planets, luminaries, and other astrological points that are moving through your birth chart on a day-to-day basis) is to ensure you have your accurate birth time.

Your Rising sign is determined by which zodiac sign was on the horizon when you were born, something that changes very two-ish hours. So yes, sometimes, it does make a difference if your birthday is inaccurate by even one minute (but usually, it's not that deep).

What are the themes of the 1st House?

Imagine that the 1st House is like the door to your mansion. The 1st House represents you, the way you navigate the world, and the first impression you make. When astrologers interpret your 1st House, they are working to how you unconsciously express yourself, how others may perceive you, and how you determine your sense of style. For example, someone with their 1st House in Gemini is likely to be chatty, fun, and display a willingness to be flexible and open-minded.

Which sign and planets are associated with the 1st House?

The zodiac sign associated with the 1st House is naturally the first sign of the zodiac, Aries. Aries is known for being a true hustler on a journey to know and be their true self. Likewise, Aries' ruling planet, Mars, is the planet associated with the 1st House. Mars is the planet of motivation, anger, and libido.

BTW: Just because Aries is the zodiac sign associated with the 1st House and Mars finds its natural home within the 1st House doesn't mean they will show up in your birth chart in those positions. Mars and Aries have the potential to show up in various locations in your chart. When they show up in your 1st House, this part of your personality may be stronger than others.

What does it mean if you have planets in your 1st House in your birth chart?

Having planets within your First House is a lot like having appliances within a home. Once you figure out what a particular appliance's function is, you will have a better understanding of how they are associated with your persona. For example, the function of the Moon in astrology is to express tenderness, sentimentality, and sadness. When the Moon is in your 1st House, it is an instrument of self-expression.

If your Moon sign is in your 1st House, you're likely perceived by strangers as someone who is sensitive or emotionally expressive (even if you don't feel that way about yourself, that's how others see you). If you have no planets within 1st House, don't worry — that simply means that you'll find them in other Houses in your birth chart.

What does it mean when planets transit your 1st House in your horoscope?

When we say planets "transit" your birth chart, that means that they're currently overlapping with a part of your birth chart. For example, if your 1st House is in Gemini, the when the Sun is in Gemini, it's transiting your 1st House. Having planets transit your 1st House is like having a temporary visitor or a borrowed piece of furniture within your home, as opposed to being a permanent feature or resident. Planets visiting your 1st House help you better understand yourself and how you navigate the world.

Remember, just because the planets transit through your 1st House does not mean that your 1st House ever changes zodiac signs. If you are a Capricorn Rising, you will always be a Capricorn Rising. If a planet is transiting through your 1st House, the planet is probably within the same sign as your 1st House sign. So, let's say that Saturn is transiting within your 1st House of self. That means the themes and functions associated with Saturn — like hard work, structure, and ambition — will become a focal point of your self-development for this period of time (but not permanently). You may discover that while Saturn transits through your 1st House, you need to become more disciplined and take on more responsibility. You might also notice that those around you start taking you a lot more seriously!
