The fallout of two famous wives of British soccer stars will get a documentary treatment from Disney+. In 2019, Coleen Rooney accused Rebekah Vardy of leaking stories about her to the British tabloids. How she revealed the story earned her the nickname "Wagatha Christie," a portmanteau of 'WAG' (an oft-used, sexist acronym for "wives and girlfriends" of soccer stars) and Agatha Christie, famous British mystery author.
Last year, the case went to trial, when Vardy sued Rooney for defamation, maintaining that she personally was not behind the leak of Rooney's private life to the tabloids. In July 2022, a judge ruled that Rooney had not libeled Vardy, because Rooney's accusation against Vardy was "substantially true."
The case dominated headlines in Britain, and now, it's going to be the subject of a new, three-part docuseries on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the States. Per the Hollywood Reporter, the documentary will uncover "one of the biggest tabloid news stories in Britain over the last decade, revealing how Coleen Rooney, wife of soccer star Wayne Rooney, turned amateur sleuth to reveal who had been leaking private stories to the press, and the high-profile defamation case brought against her by fellow footballer’s wife Rebekah Vardy." The series "will be told through exclusive access" to Coleen Rooney, and feature interview with her family, friends, and key players in the trial.
In an August 2023 interview with British Vogue, Rooney shared she's been filming for the past few months and "it's brought up a lot of emotions." She added, "I felt like everyone else has spoken about it except m. And it's my story to tell." British Vogue reports that the documentary is scheduled to drop later this year.
Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story premieres this fall on Hulu.
