Résumé: McKenna-Bruce leads “How to Have Sex,” which premiered at the most recent Cannes Film Festival and won the Un Certain Regard award. She also starred in a 2022 adaptation of “Persuasion” for Netflix, and was a child actress in Britain.
Why We Care: The British actress was named the 2024 winner of the EE BAFTA Rising Star Award this past weekend, nominated alongside Jacob Elordi, Ayo Edebri, Phoebe Dynevor, and Sophie Wilde. The award, chosen by the public, recognizes emerging talent in the film industry; past winners include Emma Mackey, Daniel Kaluuya, and Kristen Stewart.
The past year has marked a major breakthrough for McKenna-Bruce. She stars in coming-of-age drama “How to Have Sex,” which after its Cannes premiere was released in the U.K. last fall and recently opened in theaters Stateside. In December, McKenna-Bruce won best lead performance at the British Independent Film Awards, and earlier this month took home Breakthrough Performer of the Year at the London Film Critics’ Circle.
McKenna-Bruce wore a red Carolina Herrera gown for the film’s Cannes premiere, and returned to the brand for Sunday night’s BAFTA ceremony, accepting her award in a black strapless gown with sequin floral embellishment. The actress, who works with stylist Holly White, has also recently worn looks by London-based designers including Simone Rocha, Erdem, Emilia Wickstead and Self Portrait, as well as Miu Miu and Dior.
Beyond awards season, the actress is slated to star in the upcoming sci-fi series “The Marshlands.” We’re excited to tune in to see what’s next.
