Fans Lose It Over Jamie Lee Curtis’ Teary Oscars Speech After First Win at 64
Jamie Lee Curtis won her first Oscar at 64, taking home the 2023 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The Everything Everywhere All at Once star delivered an emotional acceptance speech.
“We just won an Oscar!” she proclaimed.
Over four decades in the making, Jamie Lee Curtis is finally in her Oscar-winning era. In Sunday night’s ceremony, the 64-year-old was recognized as Best Supporting Actress for her role as disgruntled tax auditor Deirdre Beaubeirdra in Everything Everywhere All at Once, a film that nearly swept the event. In Curtis’ acceptance speech, it didn’t take long for her to get emotional as she thanked the village that helped her arrive at such a surreal destination.
“I know it looks like I’m standing up here by myself, but I am not. I am hundreds of people,” she said, acknowledging the cast and crew of Everything Everywhere. “We just won an Oscar!”
She went on to thank her agent, her family, and her fan base, who have been faithful since her humble horror film “it girl” beginnings. “To all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I have made for all these years, the thousands and hundreds of thousands of people, we just won an Oscar together,” she said.
In closing, Curtis teared up thinking of her parents, late actors Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. “My mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories. I just won an Oscar,” she proclaimed. In a backstage interview, she added that they would be “incredibly proud” of her win.
As for the evening’s look, the Halloween Ends star took on the not red, but champagne carpet in a glamorous gown to match. The form-fitting Dolce and Gabbana number featured waist boning, long sleeves, and lots of sparkle.
“Tonight, I’m dressed like a glass of pink champagne and sparkling apple cider, to match the carpet in the spirit of the evening @theacademy toasting ALL the nominees and artists,” she captioned an Instagram post.
The Oscar winner is still on cloud nine after last night’s win, posting a series of images to Instagram celebrating the evening and the people that made it possible.
“They ask you to metabolize and process a moment like this in 45 seconds,” she captioned the post. “This is the best photo essay of my professional career. It involves friends and colleagues and little miracles and patience, and community and collaboration, and the deep seeded, hard-earned belief that once in a while, everything, everywhere, all at once coalesces into a shiny golden moment.”
The star wrapped up her caption with more gratitude and excitement. “I will try not to over post from this moment and get back to the daily glow of chopping wood and carrying water, and being a worker amongst workers and loving my friends and my family and my rescue pup, Runi BUT in the thrill of the moment, what I would and should have said is to all of my friends and family and colleagues and the many strangers whose goodwill on this night I felt so deeply, I say to you all...WE WON AN OSCAR!”
Fans were overjoyed for the star, showering her with congratulatory messages. “So many congratulations!!! 👏👏👏” commented one fan. “I cried when you won, I was so happy for you!!!” wrote another. “One of the best wins of the night! Congrats to you Jamie Lee! So well deserved. Class act indeed! 🥰” commented another fan.
Of all the characters Curtis has stepped into—many of whom fulfilled the over-sexualized woman archetype—she told People that she is “very happy” that the role of Beaubeirdra, who represents a misunderstood “forgotten person,” landed her at the Academy Awards.
She earned recognition amongst four other nominees, including Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inishirin), Hong Chau (The Whale), and Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere).
